If you could describe Ann Arbor in one word what would it be?
“Magic.” “I think there’s something magical about this place. I think U of M is part of it. I think there’s a kindness that’s here. I think there’s a commitment to others that [sic] are here - that’s pretty rare. You can be weird in Ann Arbor. You can march to the beat of your own drum in Ann Arbor. You can be free and authentic in Ann Arbor, and nobody thinks it’s odd. I think that creates a kind of magic.”
If you could change one thing about the University what would it be?
“The way in which we know what it means to be a community, but don’t necessarily have the skills to create that community for everyone. That’s what I would change.” - E. Royster Harper, VP Student Life | #peopleofannarbor @uofmichigan #GoBlue #campus #life #students #Umich #umsocial #AnnArbor
If you could describe Ann Arbor in one word what would it be? “Accessible.” What are you going to miss most about being President of the University of Michigan? “The students.” “The most fun is talking to students… about hopes and dreams and aspirations.” “I’m always inspired and I love it.” “I just love it.” - President Mary Sue Coleman | #peopleofannarbor @uofmichigan #President #GoBlue #Umich #AnnArbor (at Michigan Union)
How many years have you been giving out parking tickets?
“11 long years… I don’t enjoy it one bit. When my wife and I decided to have children years ago, I switched jobs.”
Why did you change jobs?
“I used to be a full-time paramedic, but the sad reality is that I’m making twice as much doing this job than I was as a paramedic. Plus, as a paramedic, I didn’t have any health insurance or retirement. With this job, my whole family is covered.
Do you miss being a paramedic? “Trust me, I’d much rather be helping people and saving lives than making people angry.” - Officer Burke | #peopleofannarbor #AnnArbor #Michigan #community #life #culture #family #jobs #employment #parking @uofmichigan
How many years have you been doing this? “This’ll be 14 (going on 15) years playing out here. Wow… 15 years. That’s a milestone.” How great does this sunshine feel? “There are still giant piles of snow on the ground, but today it was warm enough to play again.” - Tom (@uofmichigan staffer) seen here playing the harmonica, washboard, & maracas | #peopleofannarbor #annarbor #umich #goblue #music #art #culture #life
What do you love About Ann Arbor?
